Photography taught me to look at the world in a different way. A photo freezes a moment in time and space. As a photographer I can choose to fix that moment as a bare representation of reality or my symbolic reinterpretation of it. Either way, my subject will continue to exist in the world beyond that instant. With this exhibition I want to take the viewer for a journey in the subject’s reality that exists outside the photo as a reminder that, when we look at a picture, we are looking at a real person with dreams, expectations, failures, and successes as a reminder that we are, and we are looking at MORE THAN A BODY .
More Than A Body is a collection of ten women’s portraits and their stories. Using a mix of photography and digital art, I have tried to represent them for who they were instead of how they looked. Each woman’s portrait is displayed together with her story to remind the viewer that she is more than what you see, she is more than a body. I've asked each woman to write her own story in her own words. I've encouraged them to choose the outfits and makeup that they felt better represented them and I used my photos and drawings to channel their narrative through symbolism. The result was incredible. These women had the courage to share their deepest secrets, their successes, and their failures. They understood that in opening up and showing their vulnerability they could inspire others. They taught us that we might all be different, but we are not alone on our journey.
They’re not posing to interpret a character but themselves. I've asked them to look back at the viewer to create a connection. I want the observers to feel observed so that they can put themselves in these women’s shoes. I want to make people think, to appreciate the uniqueness and diversity around them, to see how there’s courage in exposing your own vulnerabilities and sharing your inner pilgrimage to inspire and let others know that they are not alone.
