I believe we should accept our differences and understand that they are what makes the world a complex and interesting place. I want people to reevaluate the way they see themselves and others. This is why my art is layered. I want to represent what I see and how I feel towards my subjects and let the creation process guide my choices. ~ Maura ~
Maura was born and raised in Italy where she grew up surrounded by art both inside and outside her home. Her father's photos, her grandfather's paintings, and the time spent drawing with her mother forged a permanent bond between love and art.
After moving to the United States in 2017, she felt an urge to capture on canvas the faces and the moments that inspired her. In 2018, she created a series of acrylic portraits that displayed in a solo exhibition called Hidden Figures during the Art Walkabout in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
In 2022, she was awarded the Artist Support Grant by the Arts Council of Fayetteville which partially funded her exhibition called More Than A Body. The exhibit featured a series of 10 mixed media portraits of women and their stories, combining digital art and photography with a brief autobiographical story of the featured subject. It has been displayed in several galleries throughout the city since.
The same year, Maura was selected by the Arts Council to paint a 26 x 8 ft mural that premiered at the 2022 International Folk Festival and was then displayed on the wall of the Arts Council until September 2023. In 2024 she was commissioned a new mural that is currently being displayed in the same location.
